Possum Kingdom Lake is home to an extensive hike and bike trail system which has been recognized for excellence by the Texas Trail Head Network and named among the top 10 trails in Texas by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Possum Kingdom’s natural beauty is the perfect setting for 16 miles of winding trails found on nearly 200 acres of Brazos River Authority (BRA) land that crisscrosses along the Peninsula on Possum Kingdom Lake, near YMCA Camp Grady Spruce and Boy Scout Camp Constantin. The trail system was made possible by the Brazos River authority (BRA) through grants that were received from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

The Possum Kingdom Lake Hike and Bike trail system was designed for both beginners and those with more experience. They can be accessed by twelve trailheads which give everyone the option of taking a short hike or enjoying a longer experience. Water fountains and restrooms are located at many of the trailheads and at the park areas, but they are not available on the trail system. Each visitor should bring their own drinking water – but remember to pack it in and pack it out! Trash receptacles are provided at the trailheads but are NOT found along the trails.

Color-coded maps have been posted on the Possum Kingdom Lake bike trails that clearly identify your current location with “You Are Here.”  The BRA also installed informative signposts along the Possum Kingdom Lake trails that provide information about local geology and animals that are commonly found in the Possum Kingdom area. Among the animals sighted most often include whitetail deer, turkeys, raccoons, opossums, foxes, wild birds and snakes and lizards, according to Robert Box, Lake Ranger Sergeant at the Brazos River Authority, Possum Kingdom Lake.

You will find rest areas with cedar benches on the Possum Kingdom Lake Bike and Hike Trails that offer a chance to rest and enjoy the surrounding beauty of Possum Kingdom.  The Possum Kingdom Lake Bike and Hike Trails are a great amenity and connect multiple public areas like Sandy Beach, Bug Beach, Scenic Cove, South D&D and North D&D. For more information on the Possum Kingdom Lake Hike and Bike trail system, contact the Brazos River Authority’s website or call 940-779-2321. by Beth Caldwell
